As you know, practically every country in the world makes two time changes throughout the year. And despite repeated year after year we are many who are asking when the time change 2019 is.  Most of us have in mind that these changes are in March and October, but few remember when is the exact moment in which there is modify the clocks. In addition, as the date varies every year it is quite difficult to always remember when the time change will be carried out.

It is something that has been done for energy reasons since the 70s. Since then many countries have been joining, although not everyone contemplates this change. Spain is one of the countries that does carry out the change of time, and although it is always announced in the newspapers, the news and on the radio, we are many clueless that we usually forget the change of time.

That’s why today in this blog we are preparing you for the next change of winter time 2019. It will be held in October and is done with a view to saving energy in the cold and low light months. We tell you here all you need to know about the change of time: when it is done, why it is done, its effectiveness, how it affects us and much more.

Two hour changes are made throughout the year. One of them takes place in March and the other in October, and each of them activates summer time and winter time respectively.

During the March change, all clocks are advanced one hour. At 2 o’clock in the morning they become 3 o’clock. It is a change that is made to delay the time of getting up and going to bed, and that way we take advantage of more hours of sun throughout the summer.

This change takes place at dawn on Saturday, March 31, 2018 to Sunday, April 1, 2019. This time change marks the start of summer time, which lasts six months. The days are longer and the nights are shorter, and the hours of the day are adjusted to those of sunlight.

Although this year the March time change was on that date is not always done on the same day. The hour changes, both in March and October, are always done on weekends. The change is made in the night between a Saturday and a Sunday in order to facilitate the population adapting to the change.

On the weekend is when fewer people work, so it is easier for most of the population to better take the time change if it takes place on weekends.

The change of winter time is done in the middle of autumn in order to adapt all the factories and the industry for when the cold season arrives and less light. Throughout the autumn the days are losing light and the nights are getting longer. When the winter solstice is celebrated and this season begins, it will take place on the longest night of the year.

After this day the nights will be losing minutes little by little in favor of the days, until the summer solstice.

Due to this gradual change in the hours of sunshine throughout the year is why the time changes are carried out. When demonstrating the effectiveness of these changes have been many countries that have been joining this action over the years.

The first country that carried out the change of time was Germany, together with the allied countries, in 1016. Specifically on April 30 of that same year. Little by little, the rest of the countries joined together, and most of those who follow the time change today in 1918 are annexed.

Before starting with this regulation there were several studies about it. Benjamin Franklin published a letter commenting on how in France they got up earlier to take better advantage of the daylight hours. This letter was published in 1784 and explained how this type of action was carried out to save on candles.

From here the idea was evolving and in 1905 William Willett presented the idea on which the time change is based that we know today. He had the idea to enjoy a summer morning while most of the population of London slept.

We have already analyzed when the last change of summer time was made, now we are going to see the winter time change 2019.  It is normally done during the third or fourth weekend of October. It depends a little on how the dates fall and when the autumn equinox has taken place.

The change of winter time 2o18 will be the next one that we are going to carry out and will take place next Thursday October 28th. During that night at 3 o’clock will be 2 o’clock thus delaying clocks one hour.

This change of winter time will take place when we have already lived a little more than a month of autumn. The nights will have lengthened quite a bit, and the day will be getting shorter and shorter.

The change of winter time is done, as we will see in the next section, in order to improve the situation of factories and large production chains.

The change of winter time is done so that the factories can take better advantage of the sunny hours in the face of their production. In this way, if the working hours coincide with the sunny hours it will be necessary to use less electricity, saving a lot in the final invoice of each business.

However, this has caused much controversy for a few years. Maybe in his day this saving was true, but nowadays a lot of manufacturing and mechanical production companies work 24 continuous hours. They are the ones that would most benefit from the change, supposedly, but now they work in 8-hour shifts without stopping so the change of time is not noticed at all.

In fact there are recent studies that show that the change of summer time does not work, almost nothing is saved nationally in each country with these actions. Therefore, it may be more profitable to maintain the winter schedule throughout the year. Even so, it does not seem that this will be changed soon.

Another factor that influences this controversy is the location and size of different countries. In Spain, the country is not that big, the change of time affects almost the entire country. But in larger territories such as the United States, the operation of this action cannot be generalized. Although there are different time zones, each state’s situation vis-à-vis the sun is different, so there are states that benefit more and others do not.

There are also those who complain about how the change of time affects health. Especially to children and elderly people. It is a disorder similar to jetlag that causes everyone to be affected. The change of time affects sleep, food and routines. The first few days are very hard for many people, especially those who suffer from sleep disorders.

The dates and times discussed in this article refer to Spain. If you have doubts about another country it is best to check the newspapers or news of the area to make sure of the hours and days in which the change of time will take place. As you get closer to the dates you will see how more information is published about it and it is often reminded to the most clueless when and how they should change their clocks to adapt to the new time change.

Throughout this year, the European Commission has been studying the possibility of eliminating the change of time and how it would affect society and energy savings in order to present the proposal. According to the research, although the reduction of energy consumption is the main reason to make the change from summer to winter, according to the results obtained it does not have a great effect and it would hardly change the energy consumption of the citizens. In addition, according to a survey conducted in July 2019, 80% of citizens are in favor of eliminating the change.

At the moment nothing is certain, since we will have to wait for the result of the motion, we should bear in mind that if it is favorable, all European countries could choose their time, although from Brussels they hope to reach an agreement.
